Purpose
To establish a dress and appearance policy for University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Pharmacy students while participating in IPPEs and APPEs and the integrated pharmacotherapy skills courses. This policy outlines the minimal acceptable standard for dress and appearance and also promotes safety and prevents infection. Students must adhere to the Dress Code policy for all experiential course activities. Students must present a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance and dress in a manner appropriate to their function and not interfere with responsibilities.
When the site’s dress code policy is stricter than the School’s policy, the student should follow the site’s policy.
Policy
The following requirements apply to all UW-Madison School of Pharmacy students participating in IPPEs/APPEs and the integrated pharmacotherapy skills courses.
- Identification Students will wear their UW-Madison School of Pharmacy name tags or if applicable, name tags provided by the site. The name tag should be visible and properly displayed.
- Dress The following are guidelines for students. Compliance with these guidelines is expected at all times, including situations where personal attire may be covered by a clean white lab coat. The following dress code is to ensure students are dressed appropriately and in a neat, clean and well-groomed manner when interacting with patients and other health care professionals.
- Appropriate Dress
- Suits
- Dress pants
- Casual dress pants (i.e. Dockers, chinos, khakis, corduroys, etc.)
- Dress capris, gauchos, or cropped pants
- Skirts and dresses just above the knee or longer
- Dress shirts/blouses and collared sports shirts
- Sweaters/vests
- Sport coats/blazers
- Sleeveless and cap sleeves are appropriate as long as the majority of the shoulder is covered
- Leggings may be allowed as long as they are professional looking and worn under a dress or tunic, which covers appropriately. Leggings should be of a dark or neutral hue and may have a small or minimal pattern (e.g. no vibrant colors or patterns).
- Scrubs are allowed if they are consistent with a site’s dress code policy.
- Necklines should be conservative, high enough in cut to provide full coverage and not expose the chest when leaning or bending forward. All clothing must cover the entire torso when bending, reaching, or pulling.
- Clothing size should be appropriate and adequate for working
- Inappropriate Dress
(This list is not inclusive of all items or attire that is deemed inappropriate.)- Caps, head coverings (Exception: Head coverings may only be worn when associated with professional or religious affiliation as they relate to state or federal legislation or for medical reasons.)
- Shorts
- Blouses, shirts, sweaters, skirts, dresses or pants which do not cover the shoulders, back or stomach while standing or sitting
- Flannel shirts
- T-shirts (e.g. graphic and athletic t-shirts)
- Exercise/athletic clothing (sweatshirts, sweatpants, jogging suits, etc.)
- Sheer or see-through or skintight garments
- Bib overalls
- Any jean or jean-styled pant (denim jeans, blue jeans, white jeans, color fashion jeans, etc.)
- Pants worn below hip level
- Clothing with graphics or product endorsements. Small emblems (i.e. quarter sized) are not allowed
- Appropriate Dress
- Clothing condition Clothing should be clean, neat, in good condition and fit properly. Torn, faded, stained or frayed articles of clothing are not acceptable.
- Shoes Shoes should be clean and in good repair. Closed-toed shoes must be worn at all times.
- Pins Pins may be worn on clothing as long as they are discreet and tasteful and does not promote a product.
- Appearance
- Hair should be neat, clean, and well-groomed. Students should follow the policy at their experiential sites regarding hair color and appearance which may be stricter than this policy.
- Cologne, perfume, make-up and jewelry may be worn sparingly, however; Please note: Fragrances from scented personal care products such as cologne, perfume, aftershave lotions, scented hand/body lotions and similar products can trigger allergies and other conditions. Some sites may ask you to refrain from using/wearing fragranced/scented products.
- Ear and facial piercings may be allowed if rings or studs are small and discreet. The only exception is for religious reasons.
- Tattoos with offensive images/wording should be covered. Students may also be asked to cover tattoos that could be considered offensive.
- Cleanliness
- Proper hand washing techniques are important for personal safety and control of infection.
- Each student is responsible for maintaining personal hygiene needs and cleanliness.
- Nails should be neatly trimmed and clean. Artificial nails are not permitted to help prevent infection.
- Enforcement
- Students will be informed of this policy during course orientation.
- Clinical Instructors will address this policy during the student’s orientation to the IPPE/APPE site.
- Clinical Instructors will ask the student to leave the site if the student is noncompliant with this or the site’s policy. If noncompliance continues this will result in an incomplete course grade or other disciplinary action if necessary, as determined by the Course Coordinator.
- Exceptions
- Requests for exceptions related to medical conditions or religious accommodations should be submitted to the Assistant Dean for Experiential Education or the Director of Pharmacotherapy Laboratories and will be reviewed accordingly.
