In situations of inclement weather, students are expected to use good judgment when traveling to the rotation site. Students should contact their clinical instructor to discuss any change in attendance plans. Hours missed due to inclement weather will need to be made up.
The state of Wisconsin enjoys all seasons: spring, summer, fall, and winter. Weather in Wisconsin changes quickly and it is important for students to stay alert to weather forecasts, especially in the winter. Our priority is for students to stay safe in inclement weather and we offer the following tips.
APPE Students – Students should check the weather forecast on a regular basis. During the first week of the winter blocks, (Blocks 5, 6, and 7), students should talk with their preceptor about who to contact and site procedures for inclement weather. Since APPE hours count towards your licensure requirement, hours missed due to inclement weather need to be made up. As a reminder, professional days are to be used to attend professional pharmacy meetings or for job or residency interviews. Using professional days for time missed due to inclement weather is not appropriate. Students may wish to plan ahead and consider putting in extra time before or after the usual clerkship hours or time on weekends to have extra hours banked if bad weather occurs. Putting in extra time at the site needs to be confirmed with your preceptor.
If bad weather occurs OR if the University of Wisconsin-Madison closes due to inclement weather, students:
- Should use good judgment when deciding to go to their rotation site. Please note that if the UW Madison campus closes due to inclement weather, students may still go to their rotation site.
- Should contact their preceptor and follow the inclement weather procedure as discussed during week one.
- Should work with their preceptor to arrange make up hours for any time missed.
- Should make up time missed before or after the usual clerkship hours or on weekends. Students need to be at the site when making up hours.
- Having difficulty rescheduling hours due to inclement weather may contact Mara Kieser at mara.kieser@wisc.edu for assistance.
IPPE Students – Students should check the weather forecast on a regular basis. If students have IPPE hours scheduled during bad weather OR if the University of Wisconsin-Madison closes due to inclement weather, students:
- Should use good judgment when deciding to go to their rotation site. Please note that when the UW Madison campus is closed, students may go to their rotation site.
- Should contact their preceptor to confirm their IPPE hours and if the site is open.
- Deciding not go to their site or if the site is closed should contact their preceptor and arrange a different time to complete their IPPE hours.
- Confirming a new schedule with their preceptor that falls in a different block should contact Tina Rundle in the Experiential Education Office at tina.rundle@wisc.edu to have the block changed.
