Pharmacy Practice Experience II (728-526)
1 credit course
This course is the second experience of a three-year Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) sequence. This one-credit course provides opportunities to integrate learning from prior didactic courses such as The Role of the Pharmacist in the Public Health System, Managing Pharmacy Systems for Patient Care, current pharmacotherapy courses, and a previous community IPPE, into observation and discussion of the provision of patient care. Throughout this course students will participate in a wide- variety of activities to expose them to the role of the pharmacist and patient care opportunities that exist in and out of the pharmacy practice setting. The focus of this course is on the provision of care in an institutional setting along with a variety of pharmacy practice settings which fall under an elective category. Students will also continue to be exposed to the Pharmacist Patient Care Process (PPCP), which is a framework for providing patient care in a pharmacy practice setting.
The Canvas course website will provide detailed guidance on the primary components of this course:
- Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences (IPPEs) are guided experiences for surveying pharmacy practice settings and the various roles pharmacists undertake. Pharmacists’ roles are influenced by the practice environment and the scope of practice rules and guidelines.
- Institutional IPPE: Students will observe and engage for 40 hours at one institutional practice site during an assigned week. Students will complete a site checklist and submit a reflection online.
- Elective IPPE: Students will observe and engage for 16 hours at one elective site during an assigned week. Students will complete a site checklist and submit a reflection online.
Throughout the PharmD curriculum, students will develop and enhance patient-centered care skills. The Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (PPCP) is emphasized throughout the four years of the PharmD program. This course will continue to expose students to the PPCP through observational IPPEs. You will observe and participate in patient care and consider how the Collection and Assessment of patient medication and health information can be used to Plan and Implement patient care. Students will also observe and participate in the Monitoring and Follow-up of patient care activities and will observe pharmacist documentation of patient care.
