The primary goals for this course are to: 1) Learn about the role of the pharmacist(s), technicians, and other staff/healthcare providers at an institutional site; 2) Reflect on pharmacist-delivered patient care as it relates to the Pharmacist Patient Care Process and previous coursework; 3) Discuss healthcare disparities and the impact of biases on patient care provided.
Upon completion of the 728-526 courses, the student is expected to:*
- Develop and enhance oral and written communication skills with patients, pharmacists, and other healthcare providers. (SOP EO: 6a, 6b, 6c)
- Retrieve professional and lay literature in order to acquire information about therapeutic agents and to provide health information to patients and the public. (SOP EO: 1)
- Explore sources of information that can lead to appropriate clinical decision making (i.e. medical records, laboratory reports, and institutional policies and procedures). (SOP EO: 2,3 and 6)
- Display professional attitudes, habits, and values in accordance with ethical and social guidelines. (SOP EO: 11)
- Identify examples of bias in the healthcare setting and how they contribute to the quality of care provided to a patient. (SOP EO: 12)
- Develop an understanding of the pharmacist’s role on the healthcare team and the complexities involved in interprofessional communication (SOP EO: 6b, 7)
- Identify and discuss the various roles pharmacists assume in the health care system, especially their role in providing patient-centered care using the Pharmacist Patient Care Process (PPCP). (SOP EO: 9, 10,11)
- Reflect upon experiences through structured learning activities and assignments. (SOP EO: 15)
